# What Customs Data Can and Cannot Tell You About a Buyer

> Customs data can reveal shipment history and trading relationships, but it cannot prove current buying intent or guarantee a complete buyer profile.

Customs data is useful evidence for export research, but it answers a narrower question than many teams expect: what shipments were recorded, by whom, and along which routes? It does not automatically tell you whether a company is still buying, who makes the decision, or whether the company fits your product today.

What customs data can show

Shipment records can help you identify declared products, HS codes, shipment dates, ports, shippers, consignees and recurring trade relationships where that information is available. Repeated records can reveal patterns such as seasonality, route concentration or a change in suppliers. Those signals are useful for prioritising research.

What it cannot prove

A historical shipment is not proof of a current purchase requirement. Records may be incomplete, delayed, anonymised or unavailable in a target country. A consignee may be a distributor, broker, affiliate or logistics intermediary rather than the end buyer. An HS code can also be broad, so it should be checked against product descriptions and other evidence.

A practical buyer-research workflow

Start with the product definition and the destination market. Filter the relevant HS code and date range, then compare recurring parties and routes. Read the record alongside the company website, product catalogue and public contact information. Record the source and date for every conclusion, and label assumptions separately from observed facts.

Use the evidence to choose the next question

The best outcome is a qualified research shortlist, not an unverified buyer list. Ask whether the company imports the relevant product, whether the activity is recent enough to matter, and whether its business model matches your offer. If a key field is missing, keep the uncertainty visible instead of filling it with a guess.

EximAgent helps teams analyse buyers using shipment evidence and then continue with company research.
